As Australia continues its journey to net zero, the increasing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has brought about a new set of considerations. One of the more pressing issues among these considerations is the development of a standardised charging etiquette to ensure smooth and efficient use of the available charging infrastructure.
Last week we hosted a webinar discussing the emerging challenges and solutions in EV charging etiquette using implementation science methodologies. "Driving Change: Navigating the Future of EV Charging Etiquette" was led by Arya Shinde and A/Prof. Natalie Taylor from the School of Population Health and investigated using implementation science approaches in this problem area. This approach focuses on applying scientific research and innovations to real-world practice, and their project aims to understand and address the barriers to EV adoption and charging behaviour.
Key findings
- Need for Universal Charging Etiquette: The majority of participants emphasised the importance of clear signage and flexible rules at charging stations.
- Tailored Education: Younger demographics showed a preference for digital media, while older users favoured in-person education.
- Infrastructure and Knowledge Gaps: Insufficient charging stations and a lack of knowledge about EV technology and proper charging behaviour were identified as significant barriers.
To address these challenges, the project proposes several innovative solutions. There were also some great discussions in the Q&A that followed the webinar, so be sure to have a watch of the recording below to hear all about it!
